Caltech DATA, a new research data repository, is launched by Caltech and CERN spin-off TIND

Released June 02, 2017

Pasadena, CA and Geneva, Switzerland – June 2, 2017The Caltech Research Data Repository (CaltechDATA) was created by Caltech and TIND, a spin-off of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The platform has now officially launched as a service for Caltech faculty, staff, students, and research collaborations.

“The Caltech Library wanted to develop a new service that would allow researchers to easily preserve and share their research data. It was important for researchers to have an easy way to describe and upload their data files,” says Tom Morell, research data specialist at the library. “We designed a custom deposit form that leverages the most recent DataCite 4.0 metadata with customizations specific to Caltech. We also integrated cloud-based storage so CaltechDATA can grow and support large files. Caltech library staff worked intensively with TIND to design, customize, and test CaltechDATA.”

CaltechDATA is the first-ever production site of TIND’s repository service for research data management (TIND RDM), a platform developed by TIND based on CERN technology for data management and preservation.

“Research data management is hard! Data sets are complicated to describe accurately and difficult to manage at scale,” says Alexander Nietzold, chief executive officer of TIND. “TIND is without doubt privileged to launch our RDM service in a close partnership with the Caltech Library. Through providing detailed feedback, creative ideas and thorough testing, a solid platform has been implemented that also has the ability to continuously evolve as data management requirements continue to grow and emerge.”
